You guys have asked me to create a blog, and so here it is! I'm going to see if it will let me date these backward so it stays in line with original posts, and I'll probably be adding a little content to the original posts.

My mother-in-law has been utterly fascinated by 23andMe after she sent in her sample and they identified her granddaughter as a relative; as this tale unfolds, one thing I have learned is that a lot of this damn boomer generation does NOT understand the basic concepts of DNA and inheritance. She bought her son and I kits (as well as other family members) for Christmas. We kinda forgot about them, and finally sent them off about two weeks ago, and the results came in today. MIL has repeatedly cracked jokes about how we can now find out if her son is really hers, so hope she isn't hiding anything!

I have been told my entire life from my father’s side that we are more than half Swedish, with much of the rest being Irish. My mother’s side is supposed to heavy on the British, with some French and a tiny bit of Native American (Cherokee). Curiously, I have ZERO Scandinavian DNA. Definitely have lots of British and Irish, and a little French plus the Native American.

My first reaction is that I've been lied to my entire life. I ask a paternal first cousin, ML, our resident family tree expert. She confirms that we should be predominantly Swedish and Irish, as I've been told. She tells me to contact another paternal first cousin, JD, who has taken one of these tests. I ask JD, and she had indeed taken one of these - 78% Scandinavian. Well then. I can tell you real quick this math is not adding up.

Neither JD nor her mom, PD, are flagged as relatives on my account; it turns out JD's sample had been pulled down for a re-test due to an insufficient sample, and PD's account was kept private. Meanwhile, all that was told to me from my mothers side seems pretty accurate.

The way I see it, I've got a couple possibilities here - I've either been switched at birth or my mother's a ho...

Y’all, I think my mother is a ho.
